Little Miracles (Lighthouses)
A series of painted photographs depicting phantom lighthouses over the view from Pendennis Point in Falmouth.
50 years ago the artist Bas Jan Ader set sail in a tiny sailboat from Cape Cod, USA, as part of an artwork he called In Search of the Miraculous. His destination was Falmouth in Cornwall, 3,086 miles away on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean; sadly he was lost at sea and never seen again.
Little Miracles is a series of paintings of phantom lighthouses onto photographs we took of the view from Pendennis Point in Falmouth – the place where Bas Jan Ader would have first been sighted sailing over the horizon if his trip had been successful.
As we stood upon the shore hypnotised by the crashing waves and thinking of Bas Jan Ader alone at sea on his final voyage, our thoughts also drifted to Virginia Woolf who spent her childhood summers in nearby St Ives. The lighthouse that sits in the bay there later inspired her to write To The Lighthouse, a book which has been a continuous inspiration to us.
Like the lighthouse beacons on the coast guiding boats on their journey, Virginia Woolf, Bas Jan Ader and many other artists who have come before are our guiding lights, showing us the way with both inspirations and warnings.
We are delighted to make a limited number of these available to buy.
